What to Pack in Your Child’s Childcare Bag

Starting childcare29 April 20262 min read

Preparing your child for a day at childcare can feel overwhelming especially if you’re not sure what they’ll need. Having a well-packed childcare bag ensures your child stays comfortable, happy, and ready to enjoy their day without any unnecessary stress.

At Altona Early Education, we aim to make the transition as smooth as possible for both children and parents. Here’s a simple guide on what to pack in your child’s childcare bag and why each item matters.

Why Packing the Right Items Matters

A well-prepared bag helps your child feel secure and supported throughout the day. It also allows educators to meet your child’s needs quickly, whether it’s changing clothes, settling them for rest time, or keeping them comfortable during play.

Being organised can help:

Essential Items for Your Child’s Childcare Bag

While requirements may vary slightly depending on age and centre policies, here are the most common essentials:

  1. Spare Clothes
Children are active, and mess is part of learning! Pack:

    • 2–3 changes of clothes
    • Weather-appropriate outfits
    • Underwear (if toilet training)
  2. Hat and Weather Protection
Outdoor play is part of every day, so include:

    • A wide-brimmed hat
    • A jumper or jacket for cooler days
    • Sunscreen (if required by your centre)
  3. Comfort Items
A familiar item from home can help your child feel safe:

    • Favourite toy, blanket, or soft toy
    • Dummy (if used)
  4. Food and Drink (if applicable)
    Depending on your centre:

    • A labelled water bottle
    • Lunch and snacks (if meals aren’t provided)
  5. Sleep Essentials
    For younger children who nap:

    • Fitted sheet or bedding (if required)
    • Comfort item for rest time
  6. Nappies and Hygiene Items
    For babies and toddlers:

    • Nappies or pull-ups
    • Wipes
    • Nappy cream (if needed)

Don’t Forget to Label Everything

Labelling your child’s belongings is one of the simplest but most important steps. It helps prevent items from being lost or mixed up with other children’s belongings.

Make sure to label:

Tips to Stay Organised

Keeping your childcare bag organised can make daily routines much easier:

✅ Pack the bag the night before
✅ Check for dirty clothes or empty containers daily
✅ Restock items like nappies and spare clothes regularly
✅ Keep a checklist handy to avoid forgetting essentials
